Keeping servers on a network automatically updated has many advantages:

• Provides access to new features that are available.
• Fixes bugs that may be present on your system.
• Provides security updates that can be critical to keep your network protected.

Servers can be updated in many ways. You may have to go to the company's site to download new updates. Messages may be sent to the admin with information on downloading new updates, or the system can have an auto-update feature, which downloads the update itself. An auto-update system is the preferred method to updating your server. An auto-update system will check automatically for updates and download the necessary programs; this eliminates the chance that a download will be forgotten.

Servers that have security features and are protecting your network should always use an auto-update feature. Firewall spam filters need to be updated whenever a security patch is available. If the sever is not updated for days or weeks it could allow for potential security breaches. Anti-virus software should also be auto-updated to combat the latest viruses and other malicious code.
